Alas, I made a promise to myself and those interested that no matter what, there will be one song for every week of the year, regardless of how late they get posted. I've come back to fulfill that promise, and upon my deciding process noticed many songs still needing a feature beyond 2010. Therefore, it is quite likely I will be continuing the series into 2011, especially since the end-of-the-year playlists are actually very good listens.
The format will change a bit though for the new year's playlist to help keep a timely schedule and interesting spectrum: descriptions may not be written for a song of the week at all. If you have comments or questions, feel free to respond and I will likewise, but you may see the usual few paragraphs or absolutely no explanation for the week's chosen tune. It all depends on how much time and motivation gets spared by my stress. ALSO, I'm expanding the expected posting date from Sundays to the entire weekend. I'll still try and shoot for Sundays, but depending on my personal schedule, a new song could go up anywhere from Friday afternoon to Monday morning.
This post, however, is a catch-up! The following nine songs make up the missing nine weeks from 2010. For this, I pulled out all the stops. Some powerful songs are in this list, so don't shrug it off as bunch of spewed-out throwaways! (Even if the explanations are short!)
"Changeless" by Carbon Leaf from the album Indian Summer. 2004.
An upbeat tune about good, old-fashioned reminiscing.
"He Will Call You Baby" by Cowboy Junkies from the album One Soul Now. 2004.
Quite the dark and haunting number. I can't help but think of some gruesome scene with aggressors mockingly calling their target "baby", though I doubt the intention is THAT evil. A word usually reserved for sweetness and niceties being used in this manner though... geez...
"At Least We're Dreaming" by Eve 6 from the album It's All in Your Head. 2003.
A fantastic anthem for those who feel lost or aimless. Called it one of my "theme songs" once myself, actually.
"Am I Wrong" by Keb' Mo' from the album Keb' Mo'. 1994.
Amazing in its simplicity. One man and his blues guitar against a bass-snare one-two punch.
"Slow Motion" by Third Eye Blind from the album Blue. 1999.
Ironically, I've only known this song as the edited version, which cuts out every part but the choruses, for all but perhaps the last six months. To my disbelief and contrary to the seemingly peaceful guitar riff, the missing chunks get heavy and hit very, very hard. Listen to the lyrics and be stunned. Serious business.
"The Bird and the Worm" by The Used from the album Lies for the Liars. 2007.
Different spin on the emo / hard rock concept. Spooky, almost. Oddly tinged. Especially that intro (and the music video, of course!)
"San Francisco" by The Alkaline Trio from the album Godamnit. 1998.
I understand that this isn't as polished a sound as most would want, but sometimes it's that nitty-gritty roughness that makes something enjoyable. Alk3 happens to rank among my favorite bands- this song among my favorite of theirs.
"Unless It's Kicks" by Okkervil River from the album The Stage Names. 2007.
Another song that I've called my "theme song" before. I''ve tried to make a "Top 100" list for music before, but I'd say this song would easily a slot in the five most favorite. Some may find it repetitive, but I love that driving intensity. Mix it with splendid, relatable lyrics and, well... fill in the rest.
"There's No Secrets This Year" by Silversun Pickups from the album Swoon. 2009.
For last year's end-of-the-year song, I picked a semi-obscure oldie built upon "Auld Lang Syne" as a bell-ringer for January's arrival. "No Secrets" fits the same offbeat-potential-holiday-ish tune, and so here it belongs. Indie at its finest.
Okay, consider 2010 officially done on the blog! If you'd like to see the year end playlist, go ahead and click the song of the week tag and lookit the first week of 01/2010 to this post. At the very least, I'll get a lotta milage out of the mix- hopefully you do too. Sometime in the next few days, expect to see the kickstart to 2011's list with the first two weeks-worth of entries!
And for those still reading, thanks for sticking through a very... awkward and oblong year!
