WTF?

WTF indeed! We stand for Films, Tunes, and Whatever else we feel like (not necessarily in order!) Professor Nonsense heads the 'Whatever' department, posting ramblings ranging from the decrepit, to the offbeat, to the just plain absurd! The mysterious Randor takes helm of the 'Tunes' front, detailing the various melodic messages he gets in earfuls. Weekly recommendations and various musings follow his shadows. Finally, our veteran movie critic, Lt Archie Hicox, commands the 'Film' battlefield, giving war-weathered reviews on flicks the way he sees them. Through the eyes of a well-versed renegade, he stands down for no man! Together we are (W)hatever(T)unes(F)ilms!

Randor's Song of the Week: 09.19.10

A Group Called Smith
"Baby, It's You" by Smith from the album A Group Called Smith. 1969.

Changing gears from last week's song (via bad blood in a relationship to comfy, happy connections), we've got this groovy cover of a Shirelles' doo-wop hit. You may have heard the Beatles' version as well, for all three embodiments of the song had their own type of success. It just so happens that, although all stylings have their merits, Smith scores the goal with it for me. I don't seem to be the alone in this school of thought either, for of the trio it reached the highest on the charts at spot number five. Rightly so- lead singer Gayle McCormick just wails out those lyrics on the soul-packed back-groove. Just don't confuse them with The Smiths.
I mentioned this song on a prior SotW, way back before the blog. For the week of July 12, 2009, Bonnie Raitt had the spotlight on "Runaway". These two songs are actually quite similar. Both are sultry re-interpretations of older songs with a soulful twist by a female singer who can absolutely belt out her voice. They're both splendidly done, and I always figured to give Smith their own nod separate from Raitt. Now that the week has come, I find there's not too much to say myself. I'll repeat: it's soulful. It's groovy. It's almost lustful. The greatest factor that accelerates these traits is the masterful balance given by the roller coaster of dynamics. It eloquently jumps between volumes to parade the emotions, lined up with the correct lyrics of course. "Don't want nobody! Nobody!" blares loudest to expel the questioning and turmoil before quietly stating the simple, obvious fact: "'Cuz baby, it's you!" Great song in general, but lovebirds in particular will enjoy it.
