"Boom Swagger Boom" by The Murder City Devils from the album The Murder City Devils. 1997.
A third of the year has passed, and so as tradition I start off the new third with a similar thread to the last kickoff. For 2010, I picked the spool of small-time bands from the Seattle area. While the Murder City Devils are much more well known than the Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, I'd venture in the scope of the world they still slip under the radar's radar.
Now then, to put this diplomatically, the band has a... rugged sound. If you like the "garage band" sound, this is your band. I listened to this entire album (which was their first) and found only this track enjoyable. Perhaps because it's not the archetype of their style. The instruments are alright- mainly the "singer" stirs up the questions. Or perhaps the better term is "vocalist," as he's quite... vocal. The whole band has that punk influence, again the lead "vocalist" most prominently so, and therefore the lack of a polished sound makes sense. On later tracks, the band retains its roughness, but cleans up the dissidence a bit.
So the band as a whole is not my favorite. This song though catches my ears for its casual and confident nature. Its repetitive lyrics (the bane of my musical tastes) actually work for what it is. Basically, the tune is fun and alive. That's all there is to it.
