WTF?

WTF indeed! We stand for Films, Tunes, and Whatever else we feel like (not necessarily in order!) Professor Nonsense heads the 'Whatever' department, posting ramblings ranging from the decrepit, to the offbeat, to the just plain absurd! The mysterious Randor takes helm of the 'Tunes' front, detailing the various melodic messages he gets in earfuls. Weekly recommendations and various musings follow his shadows. Finally, our veteran movie critic, Lt Archie Hicox, commands the 'Film' battlefield, giving war-weathered reviews on flicks the way he sees them. Through the eyes of a well-versed renegade, he stands down for no man! Together we are (W)hatever(T)unes(F)ilms!

Coverstory: Yourself or Someone Like You

There's just something about this album cover. I can't really say why, but I think it's a stroke of genius.

I mean, saying that on;y the cover is fantastic is a stretch, it being Matchbox Twenty's debut album, and featuring a roster containing such hits as "3 AM," "Real World," and Push." The album, in fact was in fact successful enough to be certified 12x Platinum in the United States alone, with over 12 million sales. That's more than either Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, or the soundtrack to Titanic.

And all that with such a quirky cover shot of a pudgy guy wearing a leather cap peering into a window. The photo was considered demeaning enough by the subject, a Frank Torres of New York City, that he sued the band in 2005. Whether that suit, 9 years after the album's release, went anywhere, I can't say.

But, the short story is, his chance capture in a photo resulted in Yourself or Someone Like You having one of the most entertaining and unique cover designs of the nineties.

  1. This is probably one of my favorite CD's from the 90's. Listened to it the entire road trip from WA to WI & back when I was 8, & a very memorable album cover which made me stoked to find it for $2 at Half Price Books a few months ago haha
