
Maybe you've seen this video on Youtube of a cute little stress ball-looking toy dancing to Spoon's "Don"t You Evah."
Or, maybe you haven't. Before I continue, if the latter is true, watch it:
The truth is, what may be a source of amusement in this video, and looks like a toy, is actually a robot named Keepon.
And Keepon is just no simple robot, it is actually one of the most significant robots ever designed, able to interpret emotions, sounds, and actions through the cameras that make up its eyes, and microphone that is its nose. It is also able to express its own emotions through the movements it makes.
Did I mention it's been programmed to dance? Yes, in 2007 Keepon learned to respond to the rhythm of music due to work by Carnegie Mellon University's Marek Michalowski, and the above video is part of that result.
