"The Story" by Brandi Carlile from the album The Story. 2007.
Yes, I am aware that last week was the 29th of August. Never before have I had a featured song delayed by its entire featured length. There's no real good excuse really, I've just had lots to do, but never fear! I have no intention of dropping these song choosings, so no matter how late EVERY week will have a song (i.e. come December 31, there will be 52-ish songs). On the bright side, I've had a massive influx of new tunes and new bands, and to sort of make up for the wait, I'm making this week a double feature, so to speak, with two amazing songs (though likely not the longest postings. That's okay though, let the music speak to you instead of me!). The first song of the week, to recover from the last's absence, comes from Ravensdale, WA with lungs of steel for "The Story".
After sorting through 200 new songs the other day, only one melody managed to nest itself in my head: the opening vocal part of Carlile's little ditty. I found myself humming it, though of course did not yet know the words, and realized that while it all was quite simple, the combining force of the tune's elements make it staggeringly powerful. As mentioned, the vocal riff finds itself easy on the ears with its nicely catchy build, and with Carlile's strong voice partnering with it, you'll find no qualms about having it stuck in your head hours later. Lyrically, there's not much in the style of spectacular fireworks exploding; instead you'll see a straightforward approach with a basic synopsis of "these stories tell of who I am, but they mean nothing without someone to tell them to." For a song of this caliber, it works much better anyhow than some complicated eloquence. The glamour instead comes in melodic form, not through wordplay. Instrumentation really plays a big role in the second verse, where the intensity kicks up on all fronts. All-in-all expect to get the most impact from this number when you need to muster up something inspirational.
I'll repeat myself here and say that Brandi Carlile has an amazing voice. The best proof I can offer is the acoustic version of "The Story", though most any of her songs showcase her talent. Some other picks I can give ya are "Follow", "Tragedy", and "Shadow on the Wall". I think I mentioned last SotW that I've kinda been on a folksy run currently, so chock this singer into that realm as well. The other song I'm going to write about for September 5th sounds more Indie/Poppy, if the folk stuff doesn't quite suit you. Expect to see it in a bit here!
