"Firefly" by Sister Hazel from the album Lift. 2004.
If you actually came back to hear the explanation on why this was song of the week, congrats on being such a dedicated reader! Thank you, really. Hopefully you're so interested because you enjoy my writing and/or music tastes. I mean, I suppose it's possible you just absolutely hated this song and wanted to know why on Earth I would pick it. Whatever your reasonings for checking back, I'll give you my abridged reasonings for looking back upon the song.
It's been quite a bit more than half a fortnight, huh? two fortnights it seems. Maybe you've been listening to this song hardcore this whole time, just waiting for me to get back to compare notes. Hey, I can dream, right? Hah, if by some odd chance that's the case, you may want to look into this 20-track FREE sampler of their later work on Amazon.com. I'll be honest- I wasn't TOO familiar with any of Sister Hazel's stuff past the 2003 album Chasing Daylight. But that's such a good album, I figured so long as they keep at it they can't go wrong! If not for that sampler, somewhere down the line "Sword and Shield" or "Life Got in the Way" would have been featured.
There's a good chance you're hearing this band and thinking, "Man, they sound familiar! I've heard them before, I just don't know where!" you are not in the wrong. Shake off their occasional resemblance to Counting Crows, for they've had a chain of good hits in the late 90's. "All for You", "Champagne High", and "Beautiful Thing" fall into that niche ("Beautiful Thing" really is a beautiful thing, by the way!). They sadly drifted to obscurity, though. Perhaps that's the drive behind that amazing 20 song giveaway- get some exposure and whatnot. "Firefly" essentially maxes out their rough-edged-ness. They mainly dwell in the folk-rock/alternative-folk/whatever-you-want-to-call-more-modern-folk-music, but they've tried out genres a stone's throw away, like reggae. They're good in their zone though, and "Firefly" showcases the superb melodies and fantastic singing/harmonies. To those who haven't yet, it's worth checking out at least that sampler, if not the rest of the discography.
