WTF?

WTF indeed! We stand for Films, Tunes, and Whatever else we feel like (not necessarily in order!) Professor Nonsense heads the 'Whatever' department, posting ramblings ranging from the decrepit, to the offbeat, to the just plain absurd! The mysterious Randor takes helm of the 'Tunes' front, detailing the various melodic messages he gets in earfuls. Weekly recommendations and various musings follow his shadows. Finally, our veteran movie critic, Lt Archie Hicox, commands the 'Film' battlefield, giving war-weathered reviews on flicks the way he sees them. Through the eyes of a well-versed renegade, he stands down for no man! Together we are (W)hatever(T)unes(F)ilms!

Randor's Song of the Week: 05.09.10

The Airborne Toxic Event
"Something New" by The Airborne Toxic Event from the album The Airborne Toxic Event. 2008.

If you listen to alternative/rock, you're bound to have heard of this band, or at least their big hit "Sometime Around Midnight." No wonder it got so big- it's a great song, even for those who can't relate. Anyone who's been through a rough break-up though can really get sucked into the song. Turn it up, lock yourself in a room, and let all the memories and emotions drown you. At the tune's conclusion, you'll better... expunged, I suppose.
Other singles the band released didn't catch on as much as "Sometime Around Midnight" though. Certainly not as grandly encompassing, yet releases like "Does This Mean You're moving On?," "Gasoline," and "Wishing Well" should've gotten perhaps a bit more attention. The featured song "Something New" was on the same debut album as all of these, and after "Sometime Around Midnight" ranks my favorite on the disc. It's similar to the former but without the massive crescendo. And I guess less relate-able in the lyrics. More open-ended and poetic instead of storytelling.
It's a nice sound, and little pearls can be picked from the lyrics. Fitting to a sentence, the song describes a guy's frustration with problems and failures and his desire to move on to something new. Everyone's been there. While there's a bit of strain underlying, the tune's overall vibe is peaceful, so a listen to this can help liven the spirits. If the summary reminds you of your current situation, try it out!
