"The Plot" by St. John's Dance from the album The Plot. 2010.
Okay, I'll be honest. My knowledge of techno/house/electronica/trance is even less than my rap credentials. Which, I assure you, are quite low themselves. I know the fans of these genres can get kind of touchy when calling a trance song techno or whatever other combination, but I cannot fully define what exactly differentiates the bunch.
HOWEVER, even with my sub-standard expertise in this field, my project for this blog is to expand the musical boundaries of both myself and whatever readers we have. I'm trying to expose the big names as well as the unknowns in a spectrum of genres. Maybe we'll like what we hear, and maybe we'll writhe in pain together. It seems there's an infinite number of bands out there. They must be recording for some reason, so we'll discover their purposes and see how enjoyable their efforts are. Who knows? Perhaps rap-polka covers of ragtime hits will become your new favorite style!
Now then, while trying to discover some new flavors for my rTunes, techno and house beats came to mind. Most of my searching thus far has stumbled upon these simple constructions with equally simple lyrics, if they exist at all. Which makes sense, I believe. This sector of music exists less-so for beauty and more-so for either parties or channeling raw emotions. They're usually catchy, blasting in your head until you're driven to motion. You wouldn't sing these songs for a lover, but could very well groove it up with one on the dance floor.
All-in-all though, the majority of songs aren't necessarily memorable, so to speak. You wouldn't walk up to a DJ at some club and request, say, Scooter's "Behind the Cow". You roll along with whatever tunes they play. The song I featured here, however, strikes me differently. I know nothing of the band, except I believe they're from Sweden. To be honest, I can't even tell if the opening vocals are Swedish, some other language, or even gibberish. Exactly one minute in, the funky intro breaks into an English rap, which floats over the heavy electro-slams. It's very effective in pumping up the spirits, I think.
It may be different from my normal style. If you've been following my Song of the Week from the very early days, you'll remember how I jump around the board very frequently. Expect more of the same: never the same.
